Low on vitamins? Your body is trying to tell you something

Are you sure you're getting all the vitamins you need? Vitamin deficiency can manifest itself as physical symptoms that are easy to recognize if you know what to look for. Here's our checklist!

Lack of vitamins, can have many different effects. To keep healthy, it’s important that you’re getting everything you need.

Vitamin A

Helps normal maintenance of: sight, skin, mucous membranes and immune systems.

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Dry eyes
  • Reduced ability to see in low light / night blindness
  • Decreased resistance to infection

 

Vitamin B1 (thiamine)

Helps normal maintenance of: heart, nervous system, energy production and mental functions.

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Numbness in fingers and toes
  • Confusion
  • Problems with balance

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)

Helps normal maintenance of: skin, vision, metabolism, the nervous system, mucous membranes and red blood cells.

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Mouth sores and cracks in the corners of the mouth
  • Itching eyes
  • Dry skin
  • Brittle nails that break easily

 

Vitamin B3 (nicotinamide/niacin)

Helps normal maintenance of: skin, mucous membranes, metabolism, mental functions and nervous system.

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Skin rash
  • Vomit
  • Diarrhea

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)

Deficiency symptoms:

Vitamin B 8 (biotin)

Vitamin B9 (folate/folic acid)

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Irritability
  • Forgetfulness
  • Headache
  • Anaemia

Vitamin B12

Helps normal maintenance of: nervous system, metabolism, mental functions, immune system, formation of red blood cells and cell division.

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Anaemia
  • Diarrhea
  • Bad memory
  • Sore tongue

 

Vitamin C

Helps normal maintenance of: collagen production for skin bone and cartilage, immune system, mental functions, absorption of iron. Protects cells against damage from free radicals.

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Bleeding in the skin and gums
  • Sore healing takes time
  • Irritation

 

Vitamin D

Helps normal maintenance of: uptake and distribution of calcium and phosphorus, muscles, bones, teeth, immune system and cell division

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Impaired immunity
  • Joint and skeleton pain
  • Bones that break easily

Vitamin E

Helps normal maintenance of: protection of cells against oxidative stress.

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Visual disturbances
  • Unsteady walk

 

Vitamin K

Helps normal maintenance of bones and coagulation of blood.

Deficiency symptoms:

  • Nosebleeds
  • Wounds that do not stop bleeding

 

If you suspect that you have a deficiency disease, your doctor may check your vitamin levels in your blood.
If you are diagnosed with vitamin deficiency, it will be treated by receiving large doses of the vitamin, until the body is “filled up”. Normally, you will continue with a smaller dose, which will ensure that you get enough vitamins. Your doctor can also give you help and advice about your diet, to ensure that you get enough of the different vitamins in the future.
