Is your child hesitant to have cod liver oil? 5 tips to camouflage the oil flavor!

Have you tried everything to make your child eat cod liver oil, with no luck? Do not worry, you can smuggle it into the food without your child noticing!

The Directorate of Health recommends to to give children cod liver oil from four weeks of age. That’s because the oil contain vitamin D, which is important for maintaining the immune system’s normal functioning. The oil also contains the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These fatty acids are only available from marine sources, and contributes to the development of vision, optimal brain development and normal growth and skeletal development in children. However, The Directorate of Health says nothing about how you give your child cod liver oil. It doesn’t have to be fed the oil with a spoon. So, the oil can be mixed into the food – leaving no taste.

1. In a pasta sauce

Odd Ivar Solvold, who is a chef, recommends using cod liver oil in dishes with acid, like tomatoes. So you may add some cod liver oil in a pasta sauce to make it healthier. For babies over 6 months try mixing a teaspoon of cod liver oil in baby food glasses containing
tomato. Or you can cook yourself, with canned tomatoes, pasta, fried onions and a little minced meat, which you mix together in a blender.

2. With onions

Onions are perfect to put a damper on the cod liver oil flavor, and when you cook onions with a little oil, it gets  sweet and tempting. Try different types of onions and use a blender to mash it together with a teaspoon of oil and ingredients like sweet potato, carrot, corn or chicken fillet. Can be given to babies from 6 months and older.
